Singing Bowl

This project attempts to share a novel experience of a natural phenomenon: vibrational effects through liquid. Simply by reflecting a focused spotlight off of water within this wooden basin, a fluid caustic network is projected in real-time. Movement is instigated throughout the water by audience interaction and electronically generated sounds. This range of experience creates a call and response relationship with the artwork, where the vessel responds to visitors’ touch in one moment and provides its own vibrations the next. When calm, the water acts as a lens, creating a focused, ellipsoidal projection. With the slightest disruption, the projection can reveal subtle, hitherto unseen vibration which provides an abstracted understanding of fluid movement. The introduction of sustained electronic vibration generates mesmerizing faraday waves, which sculpt the surface of water to such an extent that the reflected projection is distorted to an unintelligible blur of light.
